Zhe Liang, MD
Thank you for entrusting me to provide your specialized care. As we begin our patient-physician relationship, I would like to share with you information about my background, my experience in medicine, and my approach to patient care.
Growing up in a family of chemical engineers, I developed a deep interest in science and have always been interested in pursuing a career in that field. That general interest was further narrowed while still a child living in Canada when my mother suffered a life-changing injury. While working as a sushi chef for a local supermarket she injured her hand, resulting in significant pain and permanent disability. Witnessing the suffering, hardship, and hopelessness she experienced inspired a resolve in me to try and help others facing similar injuries or conditions by directing my career to the science of medicine.
During my undergraduate studies at the University of Toronto in Ontario, Canada, I became fascinated by the immune system and as a result I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Immunology. I was accepted to the prestigious Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri, where I earned my medical degree. Following medical school I began my hands-on training, first as a resident in Internal Medicine at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, and then with my Rheumatology Fellowship back at Washington University. The advance training in Rheumatology perfectly matched my strong interest in the dysfunction of the immune system.
My practice at OrthoIllinois focuses general adult rheumatology conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, crystal arthropathy, spondyloarthropathy, scleroderma, lupus and vasculitis. I am also certified in musculoskeletal ultrasound for evaluation of joint inflammation and bone densitometry for diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of osteopenia and osteoporosis.
As a Rheumatologist I enjoy that I am able to establish long-term relationships with my patients and better understand their needs and goals for living their daily lives. There have been exciting and numerous scientific breakthroughs and developments of new treatment therapies for rheumatologically-based conditions that allow me access to even better medical care for my patients. My goal is to always be patient-centric and consider both a patient’s symptoms and the impact the disease is having on their personal and professional life when identifying a treatment plan.
When I am not practicing medicine I enjoy hiking, traveling, cooking, table tennis, watching movies and reading, and hanging out with my friends.
I look forward to meeting you, and working with you to reduce your symptoms and improve the quality of your daily life.
Sincerely,
Zhe Liang, MD
