Leonard “Tiger” Onsen, MD

Sometimes, personal experience can illuminate a career pathway. I found this to be the case in my choice to become an orthopedic surgeon. I was active in high school sports and as a result suffered multiple sports injuries that required lengthy treatment, and in one instance the injury led to the need to undergo surgery.

As a result, I had many interactions with physicians and became keenly aware of a physician’s ability to restore a patient’s quality of life and return them to the things they loved to do. I found this very appealing and understood it could be a career that offered a profound sense of accomplishment and satisfaction.

I enrolled in Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, where I graduated with Cum Laude honors. I then attended The University of Illinois College of Medicine at Chicago, where I earned my medical degree before beginning my residency training in orthopedic surgery at the same university.

It was during residency that I found myself drawn toward the sub-specialty of sports medicine. Not only did this specialty provide the opportunity to treat a wide range of pathologies throughout the body, but it also appealed to my love of sports, offering the ability to continue to be around sports and work with athletes.  For this reason, I pursued further advanced training with a Cedars Sinai Kerlan Jose Institute Fellowship in Sports Medicine.

Today, in my OrthoIllinois practice through OSF Medical Group, my primary focus is on surgery of the knee, shoulder, and elbow, including ligament reconstructions, tendon repairs, and cartilage procedures. I enjoy helping both athletes return to sport, and all my patients return to functional and active lives.

I strive to create a comfortable environment in which a patient can confidently make an informed care decision through education, advocacy, and mutual respect. My goal is for patients to leave my office understanding their condition, the treatment options, and assured in our partnership for the treatment and recovery path ahead.

When I am not practicing medicine, I enjoy spending time with my wife and young son, going to movies and trying new restaurants. I am also an avid fan of the Chicago Bears, Cubs, Bulls, and Blackhawks teams and try to catch as many games and highlights as I can.

Thank you for allowing me to provide your care. I look forward to working together to help you resume the activities you enjoy.
