Rolando Izquierdo, MD
Dr. Izquierdo brings a unique set of skills to McHenry County. Skills built upon solid and very diverse training opportunities. The son of Cuban immigrants, Dr. Izquierdo is fluent in both English and Spanish. He was born and raised in the Chicagoland area.
It was at the University of Cincinnati Hospitals, now known as University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where Dr. Izquierdo completed his residency that he developed his special interest in sports medicine. During this time, he provided coverage as a team physician for the University of Cincinnati athletic programs and for the Cincinnati Bengal NFL football team. As a result, he pursued additional advance training by completing fellowships in shoulder and elbow reconstruction and in sports medicine at Columbia University at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York city before launching his practice.
Dr. Izquierdo remains active in medical education and identifying best practice recommendations. He served as chairman for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons’ evidence based medicine committee for the clinical practice guideline for the management of shoulder arthritis. He has served as invited faculty at the American Academy of Orthopedics to instruct surgeons from around the world in the latest techniques in arthroscopic and reconstructive shoulder surgery. Dr. Izquierdo is an active member of the prestigious American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES). ASES is the leading national and international orthopaedic organization specializing in surgery of the shoulder and elbow.
Dr. Izquierdo routinely performs a high volume of total shoulder replacements, reverse total shoulder replacements, arthroscopic rotator cuff repairs, as well as arthroscopic shoulder instability and labral repairs. He also performs a high volume of revision shoulder replacements and surgery for failed rotator cuffs.

No one wakes up in the morning and wants rotator cuff surgery but if you find yourself in that situation you would do yourself a service to call Dr Izquierdo. The procedure fixed my shoulder issues and helped me get back to the physical activities I use to enjoy. His PA Marie, is fantastic as well. She was able to see me on short notice when I most definitely panicked about a minor pain after surgery. Dr. Izquierdo did an excellent job with the shoulder replacement. I was in a lot of pain and very limited in mobolity before the surgery. I was very concerned about the limitations in motion that I might have after the surgery. I no longer have pain in my shoulder since the surgery and after physical therapy I have no pain and my range of motion is good. The Physical Therapist told me that the type of shoulder replacement that Dr. Izquierdo put in gives me a lot of movement and that my muscle are working well. I've returned to doing many of the things I could do before I started having shoulder problems. Dr. Izquierdo took the time to walk me through my MRI and describe everything that was going on. He then proceeded to give me options. We started our very conservatively with physical therapy which did not get me back to full function. I ended up deciding on rotator cuff surgery. It was a great decision and the results were amazing. Dr. Izquierdo reworked a previous rotator cuff surgery. Previous surgery caused pain and rehab issues for 9 months. Dr. Izquierdo did the surgery on Feb. 29, 2024. I was suffering from right shoulder pain for many many years. I finally started to see many different orthopedic drs. Started off with cortisone injections. Did that for over a year until dr. Cut me off. Said I would need surgery. I wanted. Second opinion and was referred to dr. ROLANDO Izquierdo. Met with dr. Izquierdo and started the journey to a pain free shoulder. Dr. Izquierdo explained what was going on inside my shoulder and explained how he was going to fix it. I had a full torn rotator cuff, bone spur, bursitis and bicep tendonitis in my right shoulder. After the surgery my arm was in a sling for a month. 2 weeks after surgery i was in physical therapy. Listening to dr. Izquierdo and following physical therapy protocols is a key factor to full recovery. I am very happy with the outcome. No more pain while getting dressed, I am able to throw a ball without pain. I went to Dr. Izquierdo because of severe pain in my left shoulder. After being looked at and having an MRI it was decided that the best way to repair my shoulder was with a reverse shoulder replacement. Since having the surgery and completing therapy my shoulder has been great, no pain and I have been able to do any of the things that I did before the injury. If I found that I needed the same repair on my right shoulder I wouldn't hesitate to have it done. Being told I would need a a total shoulder replacement was quite devastating! I put my trust in Dr. Izquierdo’s team. Everyone starting from X-ray & MRI techs at Ortoillinois . Dr. Izquierdo knew very quickly how bad my rotator cuff tears were and he wanted to get me into surgery as quickly as possible, which was worked out perfectly. I had 3 of 4 rotator cuff tendons pulled from bone and his very talented repair was perfect. I was out of my sling after 4 weeks and my pain was very manageable. Many weeks of therapy have gotten me back to 98% of where I was before the accident. I am at very active 61 year old with hopefully many year left and his awesome work has gotten back to activity in very short order. I highly recommend Dr Izquierdo for any shoulder injury. Doctor Izquierdo has been absolutely amazing throughout my experiences with him. In 2018, he reattached my biceps tendon which had snapped at the elbow. The surgery, rehab and recovery went very well. In 2021, he did my shoulder, which sustained significant damage from an injury. My initial visit with Dr. Izquierdo was the third opinion (2 from other orthopaedic Dr.s) on whether shoulder replacement was necessary. I was extremely impressed with his demeanor, kindness and caring about my needs. His explanation of what was required and the procedure was thorough and easy to understand...complete with drawings! The day of surgery he assured me that all would be well and again explained what was about to take place along with follow up instructions. I just had my 3 year check post left shoulder replacement. I started out barely being able to raise my left arm out to the side and having pain while doing so to full range of motion and zero pain! I've completed 6 months of treatment on my right shoulder rotator cuff rebuild in June of 2021. I am pleased and even surprised at the way the shoulder has recovered from the surgery. The description of the damage in the shoulder included words like massive and severe. Physical therapy twice a week for 5.5 months. I quickly regained FULL range of motion working hard with the PT people and continued to maintain range and gain strength. Where previous to operation I would be in pain while sitting at rest and unable to sleep through the night because of it, today I am completely pain free. My range of motion has drastically improved. I went to see Dr. Izquierdo after suffering considerable shoulder pain for months. Prior to seeing him I was at a different orthopedic group who wrongly focused on my spine. Upon the first visit Dr. Izquierdo was able to narrow down my injury to two potential things, one of which is a rare neurological disorder called Parsonage-Turner syndrome. Following the results of a shoulder MRI, Dr. Izquierdo was correct as it was in fact Parsonage-Turner. We discussed different options, all of which were conservative to begin with. This approach was great as he wasn't trying to simply schedule a surgery and hope to find something. Fast forward nearly a year later and I'm recovering and have been discharged. Dr. Izquierdo has been great. He is very kind and straightforward, and most importantly he is very knowledgeable and skilled. I had a very large tear to my right rotator cuff which he repaired. I am not saying that I did not have pain and discomfort, however compared to what I have heard from others who had gone through a rotator cuff repair my pain and discomfort was minimal. I attributed this to Dr. Izquierdo skill during my surgery. I am about five and a half months post surgery and most of my strength and mobility is back. I told Dr. Izquierdo on my first visit after my surgery that I was now part of his fan club. Dr. Izquierdo did my Rotator cuff surgery on August 18th and I just finished my last follow up visit today Feb, 1st. At age 66 I didn't know how I would recover but am extremely pleased. Very professional and listens to any concerns I may have, not to mention the great Staff and his PA Maria Rivers is great. The surgery went very well and there was almost no post op pain and what there was was minor. What that tells me the surgery went well and he is very skilled, over the next 5 months of therapy and home exercises I'm nearing full range of motion and the strength has greatly improved. it's on me now to get back to pre injury strength and range of motion. Dr Izquierdo did an amazing job replacing my shoulder given that it had been infected first. He removed the partial device put in a spacer for about 9 or 10 weeks before he went in and did a complete reverse shoulder replacement. Dr. Izquierdo exceeded every expectation and outcome I could have expected for my shoulder surgery. I had a full repair of my right rotator cuff in April. A month after surgery I fell and re-tore my shoulder. He fit me into his schedule immediately and scheduled me for follow up surgery. He repaired my shoulder a second time. I had shoulder surgery for a large rotator cuff tear with Dr. Izquierdo October 2019. Prior to my surgery I read many reviews and asked for recommendations of a local physical therapist. Throughout the entire process, pre and post-surgery, every step of my surgery and recovery was explained to me. Their office uses a web portal which allowed me easy access to my records anytime I needed to refresh my memory. Back in September, i had dislocated my shoulder, not knowing and how i did it at the time. I went to my local hospital and they were able to put it back into place. From there, they referred me to Dr. Izquierdo, he examined me and told me I had a hills-sachs fracture. He then performed my surgery that November with no problem. I then found out i had a seizure in my sleep and was not aware. I am now 6 months post surgery and I feel better than ever. I had made a full recovery, with doing physical therapy of course. Ever since Dr. Izquierdo replaced my left shoulder, I've had no pain, and it feels like nothing was ever wrong with it. After the surgery I didn't even need pain meds beyond tylenol, and I only took that because they recommended it. I came in with a frozen shoulder. Dr. Izquierdo recommended therapy, which was the right call initially, but when it didn't get better after a few months, he moved ahead with the surgery. I was dreading surgery, because of a prior shoulder surgery done elsewhere 10 years earlier, but he assured me it would be much better. And it was! He and his team did a great job. This past January I slipped on the ice going to work one morning, braced my self with my right hand and tore my rotator cuff pretty bad. Saw my doctor, got MRI, surgery was the only option. so I spoke with friends and associates and two of them (By luck) had Dr. Izquierdo repaired their shoulders. In October of 2016 I had a full thickness tear of my right supraspinatus tendon in my rotator cuff, Dr. Izquierdo repaired it. In May of 2018 I took a hard fall landing on my right elbow. The olecranon was shattered into "corn flakes" as it was described. Back in March of 2018 I suffered a total rupture of a pectoral tendon. After explaining what had happened the scheduling staff worked with Dr. Rolando Izquierdo to squeeze me in as soon as possible. I had torn my rotator cuff for the third time and I was advised that my shoulder could not be fixed and I was going to need a reverse complete shoulder replacement. I was very apprehensive about this surgery but Dr and his team put my thoughts at peace. I had two shoulder surgeries by this doctor The first on my left shoulder in 2007 and the second on my right shoulder in 2015. Both involved rotator cuff repair as well as bicep tendon work. These kinds of surgeries are painful, the physical therapy is painful as well and daily living with only one arm is difficult as well. However, in both cases the outcome was perfect. After tearing the tendon which connects the pectoral muscle to the arm, I received numerous recommendations from family friends to see Dr. Izquierdo. I could not be happier that I listened to them. As a 21 year old athlete, my primary concern was getting treatment which would allow me the opportunity to return 100% to sports. Although my injury is uncommon, Dr. Izquierdo had a clear plan from the outset of my first appointment and was able to alleviate any concerns I had about the surgery or recovery process. For the first six weeks following surgery, I was under close watch by Dr. Izquierdo through frequent checkups to ensure the repair was stable. I was then assigned to a physical therapist and given a manageable timeline of how I should expect to progress throughout the remainder of my recovery. I'm now six months post-op and have returned to sports. Dr. Izquierdo, was awesome. My 26 year old daughter, an industrial electrician had severe right shoulder pain, she had spurs that were tearing her bicep tendon, and lots of bursitis. Dr. Izquierdo used surgery as a last resort, and ended up tacking her bicep tendon to her arm as it was quite torn from the spurs, his fear was that it might give way and fall as athletes have happen and the repair of that would be long and painful. she is 8 months after surgery and therapy almost 100%. The surgery was arthroscopic with very little scaring. Dr Izquierdo is concerned for your insurance coverage and costs when sending you for tests or MRI. Everything was explained in a clear concise manner. He is a good listener. Slings are provided prior to surgery so you can try them and make sure they fit properly. There is a very good therapy unit associated with his practice with which there is clear doctor to therapist communication. Today is exactly 5 months from my rotatar cuff surgery. Three major tears and a torn bicep, and I am excited to share that my shoulder feels a 100 times better. I have 99% of my flexiblity at this point, and I am now working on strentgh training. Dr. Izquierdo is a superb physician! He performed a "massive" rotator cuff repair (3 of 4 tendons were either torn or completely severed) and repaired a torn bicep. His diagnosis was right on and the surgery and post op recovery were exactly as he described they would be. He made sure I had the best physical therapist available and continually monitored my progress in physical therapy.
