My name is Dr. Mark Barba and I would like to take this opportunity to tell you more about myself, and how I became committed to healthcare. I am a subspecialized orthopedic surgeon with a practice in joint replacement and a special interest in replacements of the hip joint.
When I was growing up, I had a garage full of automotive tools and a father who patiently taught me how they worked. He was also very concerned that I properly cared for the tools and remained disciplined and organized. A place for everything and everything in its place was his lesson — boring for a child, but a great foundation for a surgeon.
I always knew I wanted to be a doctor. I could not understand how a kid would want to be anything else. I needed stitches three times while growing up and loved every visit to the emergency room! In medical school I chose to focus on orthopedics; the instruments just felt natural in my hand, and no one had to tell me which way to tighten a screw.
I chose to further subspecialize in joint replacement because I have a hard time with failure and replacement of an arthritic joint is almost always a victory. I did not see this in any other aspect of medicine I studied. I love it even more now than ever. Joint replacement implants have evolved to provide amazing results. I especially focus on devices that now allow people to return to even higher levels of activity. I would like to be able to give Dr. Barba and his staff a million stars. On May 3, 2022, Dr. Barba gave me a total hip replacement and it has made a great improvement in my quality of life. Before this hip replacement I was having a very difficult time walking and in constant pain. Due to the fact that I am what is considered obese and had seen 3 other doctors that refuse to help me unless I lost over 100 lbs, I had started to give up hope. I googled doctor in Rockford that would do hip replacement and made appointment at Orthoillinois to actually a different doctor but because of my weight he said he couldn't do surgery on me , but before I left he ask if I would like to talk to his colleague Dr Barba and after speaking to Dr Barba quickly he said I could come back for a consultation with him. At the consultation he looked over my information and said he would give me a total hip replacement , he didn't even mention my weigh. Three weeks after my consult, I had total hip replacement and I am extremely happy with the outcome. Dr. Barba was wonderful, kind and easy to talked to. Before going to see Dr. Barba I walked stiff legged and could only stand for about 10 - 15 minutes at a time. The pain was so bad it would make it unbearable to do the easiest task, just standing up to do dishes made my legs hurt so bad that I could barely walk. Dr. Barba told me that replacing both my knees would make my pain go away and it did. I can walked long distances and stand a lot longer without any pain. I met Dr. Barba on October 17 2020, I was very ill, I was not eating and I had an infection from an outside doctor after a hip replacement. He sent me to Dr. Barba to treat it. Dr. Barba did a complete exam of my body and noticed I had very severe tenderness in my back. I was his last patient on a Friday and he ordered an emergency MRI in his office which showed an extensive spine infection also. Dr. Alexander is a neurosurgeon at his office. He took me to surgery on Saturday and had to open my spine to remove the infection. The following week Dr. Barba repaired my hip and now 5 months later I am painless. I want to acknowledge the staff at Orthoillinois who stayed late on a Friday night to get my MRI, Dr. Alexander for clearing my spine infection on a weekend and Dr. Barba for not only treating my hip infection but finding the spine infection which would have likely ended my life.Patient Submitted Review

I was hit by a truck while walking the dog and flew 12 feet. I had a knee replacement that was 12 years old and all the bones around it were crushed. I went to the intensive care unit. Dr. Barba and Dr. Earhardt reconstructed my knee and now I am walking painlessly. I know the outcome of something like this is unpredictable, but regardless, these doctors were kind and supportive. I am 4 weeks after my total knee and I am ready play golf. I have no complaints, the pain management was very good. St. Anthony' was excellent the single rooms were beautiful. I was able to cook for my wife the next day as she has poor vision. I hope to get down to Arizona in three weeks to start my golf season. Dr. Barba's nurse practitioner Tori was nice also. Today, Nov. 21st, I am sitting comfortably at home nine days after having Dr. Barba and his ortho surgical team successfully remove and replace my right hip. Before my initial consultation with Dr. Barba, I'll admit, I was not 100% committed to going forward with my surgery. I am 67 years young, retired, golf 3 times a week, and have a good many boxes left to check on my bucket list. I made the correct choice choosing Dr. Barba. From start to finish, my experience has been seamless. There is pain. Much less each day. Exercises to do, Home Health Care visits, and small steps ahead. I have taken a shower while standing the last three days. Walked up and down the basement stairs yesterday. I think Dr. Barba literally saved my life. I had an operation done by another surgeon that became infected. I suffered with the infection for 9 months until I was literally at death's door. Dr. Barba did my first knee replacement and for a few weeks after my surgery I had pain in my side and down the leg that Dr. Barba did. Well I called him and he said come right in... I did and he said there’s nothing wrong with the knee after checking it over. Then he said let’s do a scan of lower extremities to get a clear look . Am 60 yr old male that had right Birmingham hip replacement eight yrs ago (2008) by Dr. Barba at OSF St. Anthony. Have experienced great results. Hospital experience was excellent. Dr. Barba found the problem with a knee replacement I had in 2014 (by a different physician in a different city)that the original physician overlooked despite many revisits for pain. After 18 months of this,I scheduled a 2nd opinion with Dr. Barba.He found the problem immediately.A few weeks later Dr. Barba did a knee replacement revision surgery & now, 6 weeks following the 2nd surgery, I am pain free & have more flexion in my knee than I have had for 2 years! The second opinion I scheduled with Dr. Barba was the best decision I could have made. A knee replacement done in 2014 with a different physician in a different city, had failed and that doctor could not find the issue. Dr. Barba found the problem immediately. Dr. Barba replaced my left knee 4 months ago, and I am thrilled with the results. I didn't realize how much I had "given up" due to the severity of my osteoarthritis. I've experienced little to no pain and only minor discomfort since my surgery, even throughout PT. His approach and technique to get me up and moving was simply phenomenal. I felt well enough to return to work (part-time) after just 3 weeks...and full-time in under 2 months! I feel better every day, my energy level has increased, and I look forward to resuming many neglected activities and to pursuing new ones. Dr. Barba replaced both of my hips last year. Before having my hips replaced, I was in pain 24/7 due to osteoarthritis. Now, after having my hips replaced, I have not had any trouble with my recovery from surgery or with my new joints. I am in my 20s and lead an active life, working as a welder and riding horses as a pass time, so I can assure anyone considering Dr. Barba as a surgeon that he is good at his job because i would not have been able to continue my lifestyle had I not gotten replacements. I started having hip problems at age 52 and went to several doctors in another state, who all told me I was too young for surgery(since "hips wear out.") When I moved to Illinois and connected with Dr. Barba at 62, he said "What are you waiting for? Let's do it." Thank goodness!! I had the right hip done several months later and when the left hip started going bad about 2 years after that, I had that done right away rather than suffer 10 years with it. I feel wonderful!!! I'm walking like I did when I was in my 20's. I'm a teacher, and I can't tell you how great it feels to walk down the halls at school and feel so YOUNG. I have no pain or noticable restriction of movement and can sleep comfortably on my side or on my back. Dr. Barba performed two modern miracles for me. In selecting a doctor to perform a major operation such as a total replacement procedure look toward a doctor who is in highly recommended and in high demand. Dr. Barba runs a very efficient hi volume office. Patient concerns, a priority, are satisfied after a short consultation. A patients trust is earned not given. At the age of 38, I was told I had arthritis in my hip, and my only option was a hip replacement. I ignored that advice. Dr. Barba was highly recommended by a close personal friend. I met with Dr. Barba as a second opinion shortly before my 42nd birthday. Being a young person for this type of operation, I was reluctant, but not being able to live with the unbearable pain any longer, I decided it was time. I wish I would have done this years ago! Dr. Barba has literally changed my life. I am almost 44, have had NO pain, I have full range of motion, and I couldn't be happier with Dr. Barba - his skill & his precision. My scar is minimal.
