When Melissa Wiegmann began experiencing persistent pain and numbness in August 2024, she initially thought it was a pinched nerve. However, as the pain worsened and her mobility declined, it became clear that something more serious was wrong. Despite undergoing six weeks of chiropractic care, Melissa’s condition deteriorated to the point where she could barely walk and experienced numbness from her upper abdomen to her feet.

“By the time my son helped me walk down the aisle at my wedding in early October, I could hardly stand,” she recalled.

An MRI revealed severe spinal stenosis in her neck with a massive C6-7 disc herniation causing severe spinal cord compression. Melissa was referred by her doctor to OrthoIllinois for specialized care. Nervous about her first visit, Melissa was struck by the team’s professionalism and compassion.

“Everyone was extremely helpful and kind,” she said. “Dr. Roh’s PA, Matt Schwabero, carefully explained my MRI results and the severity of my condition. They didn’t sugarcoat it—this surgery had to be done to prevent permanent paralysis. Their honesty and reassurance helped ease my anxiety.”

When Melissa met with Dr. Michael Roh, she relied on a walker due to severe weakness and balance issues.

“Dr. Roh saved me from being paralyzed,” Melissa said. “He’s my angel. His expertise, compassion, and straightforward approach made all the difference. He took the time to explain every detail and made me feel completely confident in his care. His team was equally outstanding—from the PA who explained my MRI to the nurses who supported me every step of the way. I truly felt like I was in the best hands.”

Melissa underwent surgery to relieve the pressure on her spinal cord and nerves. The results were immediate and life-changing.

“I stayed just one night in the hospital,” she said. “The difference was instantaneous—I felt the relief as soon as I woke up. By the third day after surgery, I didn’t need the walker anymore.”

Melissa’s recovery has been remarkable. She didn’t require physical therapy, a testament to the success of her surgery and her body’s ability to heal. Within weeks, she was off pain medication and recently returned to work.

“I can type, sit at my computer, and move without pain,” she shared. “I’m still a little wobbly, but it’s only been six weeks, and I’m doing incredibly well.”

“For patients like Melissa, rapid diagnosis and treatment are crucial to preventing irreversible loss of function”, noted Dr. Roh. “Though she required a large and complex surgery, we are all grateful that she has done extremely well and regained so much function.”

Beyond regaining her mobility, Melissa is thrilled to return to her passion for crafting.

“Before the surgery, I had to cancel all my craft shows because I couldn’t stand or sit for hours,” she said. “Now, I’m planning my first show for March. This surgery has truly given me my life back.”

Reflecting on her experience, Melissa emphasized the expertise and care she received at OrthoIllinois.

“These doctors know what they’re doing. Dr. Roh and his team gave me hope and changed my life. I’m so grateful I listened to them,” she said.
