Giovanni Incandela, DPM

I’d like to offer you a little insight into my training and how I became interested in becoming a podiatric surgeon.
Two early influences led to my desire to become a surgeon. My mother was diagnosed with cancer when I was a child. Witnessing how a medical team worked together to ensure her recovery and allow me to grow up with both my parents was tremendously impactful. I aspired to also grow up to become part of a team that made people better so they could continue to live long, high quality lives with their loved ones.
The second influence appealed to the more mechanically-inclined side of me. Various family members worked in the construction and renovation trades. I found the idea of taking something that was in dire or nonfunctioning condition and restoring it with their bare hands quite intriguing and inspiring.
Merging those early influences led me to my medical training. I wanted to choose a specialty that would allow me to restore function for people while meeting my need for variety in the conditions and treatments I would encounter to keep my practice ever changing and evolving. Podiatric surgery fit those criteria perfectly!
I double majored in Biology and Health and Human Sciences, pre-medicine emphasis, with a magna cum laude standing from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. I was accepted to the Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine, Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science in North Chicago, where I earned my Doctorate of Podiatric Medicine, again as magna cum laude. My three years of podiatric surgical residency training was served at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center here in Rockford where I served as chief resident and academic coordinator.
My practice at OrthoIllinois attends to a wide variety of podiatric injuries and conditions from hammer toes to total rearfoot reconstruction. I have a special interest in total ankle replacement surgery, ankle pathology, reconstruction/revision surgery, treatment of advanced arthritic processes and Achilles tendon pathology.
As a first generation American from an Italian immigrant family, work ethic was always a core value. I was taught and raised with the belief that if you work hard and take pride in the work you do and do it with heart and humility, success will be achieved. I take those values and principles to heart and am proud to be a part of a profession that allows me to connect with people and channel those values into my patient care. I believe there is a sacred bond between patient and physician and each of my patient encounters is a privilege I uphold with reverence.
While I find becoming a podiatric surgeon my true calling, I enjoy playing my musical instruments and spending free time woodworking, enjoying family, cooking, traveling, and staying active in my church.

My son broke his toes and I had taken him to another doctor and unfortunately left feeling like he did not care what happened with my son at all. Dr. Incadela was recommended to me , so I took my son there for a second opinion and could not have been happier! When Dr. Incadela walked into the room he apologized for running a bit behind( which I understood 100% and was not bothered by at all) and immediately asked how the initial injury happened , and listened. He took the time to review the xrays and explain all the options we had from insoles for his shoe to offer stability for his toe all the way to the extreme of having surgery. I knew I needed foot surgery that’s why I went to see Dr Incandela the first time. He immediately gave me an excellent impression by being very friendly, attentive and professional. I needed to postpone the surgery for a few months (January, 2025) still and as the date is nearing I started to chicken out so I requested an other appointment with him to talk things over. I saw Dr. Incandela for a second opinion on my foot. I have had 2 surgeries on it since November 2023 by a different doctor. I wasted a lot of precious time with other doctors who treated the symptoms of my pain with meds, lotions, PT and the Boot... none of which solved my problem. When I switched to Ortho, I was lucky enough to get Dr. Incandela, who looked at my x-ray, listened to my history, and asked me what I wanted. When I told him that I wanted it fixed he said 'I can do that!' And he did! After 2 surgeries I am recovering well with very little pain which should end after a complete recovery. My recommendations are that you bring a list of questions and concerns for your appt. He will explain your options and answer any questions and let you decide your best solution. Bring gloves with good grips to help you get up the steps to the x-ray machine as the metal bars can be very slippery and it was very difficult for me. Dr.Incandela is the best foot doctor and so glad to be treated by such a lovely caring doctor! I was scared to have surgery but Incandela made sure to walk me through it and make sure I better understood what was going on! He is very polite and there for anything and everything you need and treats you as if your his own family! I.LOVE.Dr.Incandela. He is patient. He actually listens and then responds in a very kind way. He allows me to ask all the questions (and I ask a lot). He spells out the options and pros and cons for treatment. And (being the second specialist that I've seen for this condition) has helped me, without surgery!
